SCAMPERING A TEASPOON!!!

A sketch of a teaspoon done by me.

An object so simple yet versatile in function. Its general function is to apply sugar(Powder, cube or crystals) and stir tea in a teacup.

In this assignment, Im expected to apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques to it and give a brief explanation of what new product comes of this and how it can be marketed.

As previously discuss the Scamper method being:

  • Substitute something
  • Combine it with something else.
  • Adapt something to it.
  • Modify or Magnify it.
  • Put it to some other use.
  • Eliminate something.
  • Reverse or Rearrange it.

If I will substitute something to a teaspoon, that will be the material that it is made from, metal! I could use plastic or wood.

With plastic I could add colour or images to appeal to a wide range of customers, children, youth and adults alike. It also gains a property of not conducting heat and is recycleable.

With wood, different types of wood density, weight and grain patterns will be a good marketing strategy. For example, light wood will give it a lighter brown colour and will be noiseless when it gets in contact with the teacup. It also doesnt conduct heat and is biodegradeable. It will appeal to the environmentally conscious.

The handle can also be combined with paint, printed or branded by applying heat to individual preferences.

The handle can be adapted to conform with the edges of a teacup for example so it can be hung on the rim of the cup when not in use and for easy access. It will appeal to those who like creativity and for use in confined spaces.

A teaspoon modified to a ring.

It can also be modified and Put it to some other use like a ring or ornament as explained in the above image. A one-off ornarment for those that crave it.

A sketch done by me of a teaspoon with part of the scoop cut out.

Here part of the scoop of the teaspoon has been eliminated to create sort of a hybrid. It functions as a teaspoon and a little fork for picking up small food and appeals to those who prefer using minimalistic cutlery.

Though I must say that it has reduced the scoop volume for liquid substances but gained other functions in the process.

A sketch done by me of a teaspoon-teabag strainer .

And finally, this general shape of the teaspoon has been rearranged in some way to function as a teabag strainer. This will appeal to those who love to squeeze every strain of tea from the teabag or those you dont like the puddle caused by an unstrained teabag..

With my sketches, images and details shown above, I try to touch every element of the Scamper method and hope it best explains it.

When applying the method I realized how much easier one can be creative and it also helped me to put pen to paper(Sketching) once again after a very long time.
