Getting the message across

Choose one of the following themes:

  • Mass destruction
  • Power
  • Christmas
  • New life
  • Love

Using the Internet, find a photograph that communicates the theme. Share the photo on your WordPress blog, explaining your choice.
I chose New Life.

New Life.

The unimaginable joy of bringing a new life form in your own image and likeness can not be quantified. The love, care and tenderness that is expressed when a child is born gives more meaning to life itself. It represents continuity and prosperity. It gives hope.

Shutter speed and manual focus

Using a SRL camera, practicing the use of manual camera controls. In this second learning activity you are going experiment with shutter speed and a manual focus.

You are asked to visit an active environment (anything that moves), creating two series of photos:

Action 1: Use very fast shutter speeds to freeze movements.

Action 2: Using slow shutter speeds to create an illusion of movement (motion blur)

Tip: use a stand or another support for the camera to avoid an out of focus image.

You are required to use a manual focus on all of the photographs, and write down the camera settings for each shot.

Fast shutter speed: ISO 100 35mm f/4,5 Shutter speed 1/320 AWB

Slow shutter speed: ISO100 38mm f/16 Shutter speed 1/10 AWB

Slow shutter speed ISO100 41mm F/32 1,6 AWB

Fast shutter speed ISO100 41mm F/5 1/25 AWB

Fast shutter speed ISO100 18mm F/3,5 1/30 Bulb

Slow shutter speed ISO100 18mm F/22 1,3 Bulb

Analyzing the composition of a photograph

This topic has shed more light into the composition of photos. Before now, I just analyze the quality (sharpness), size and format it was saved in.

This weeks activity:

Analyzing the composition of  photograph, draw lines and write on top of the actual image.
You can do this either by printing the image on paper, using a pen or marker to draw lines and post it-notes to explain. Or using Photoshop to draw and write on the image digitally. Or any other method that serves the purpose.

Original Photograph

Analyzing the Photograph

The subjects are almost clustered together and are looking in different directions. The photo was taken with a large aperture so that depth-of-field isn’t too wide which makes the foreground a bit out-of-focus but visible enough without being distracting. There is evidence of perspective in the foreground and the reflected image on the mirror which also reveals the position the photo was taken from and what seems to be the hand of the photographer.

This is a dramatic photo. The photographer chose to take the photo in black and white (desaturated form) to convey a somber or sorrowful mood. There is a sense of desperation and pain on the faces of the subjects. There also seems to be a hidden message, a cry for help.

Photography :- Aperture and Manual Focus

After what seems like a long practice and lectures on the use and features of an SLR camera, I return with my findings and what I have  learnt so far. In this topic aperture and manual focus. I had to research on the web, friends and books relating to my camera model. It was frustrating at first when I didnt understand it but later it became interesting when it became clear to me how they function.

Aperture:

The amount of light passing through the lens is controlled by the aperture hole. The aperture value indicates how much light can pass through.

Using a SRL camera, practicing the use of manual camera controls. In this first learning activity you are going experiment with the aperture and a manual focus. (In the next learning activity you´ll be setting manual shutter speed).

You are going to experiment with depth of field creating two series of photos:

  • Landscape (using large depth of field)
  • Close-ups (using shallow depth of field)

Below, a quick practice shot of  wine bottles on a shelf.

(No Photoshop, Handheld, Aperture and Shutter speed changed, Auto WB, focal lenght and ISO constant)

Large depth of field ISO 400 25 mm f/10 Shutter speed 1/6

Shallow depth of field ISO 400  25 mm  f/4 Shutter speed 1/40

Shallow dept of field ISO 400 55 mm f/5.6 Shutter speed 1/160

Large dept of field ISO 250 24 mm f/4 Shutter speed 1/500

Photography!!!

Now, this is a subject I really feel Im lacking in skills and will really love to understand the terminologies and techniques to take great photos and capture moods as well. An image can do all the talking in expressing a message to an audience. It sometimes limits the use of words and I think in my own view breaks all language barriers. It simply passes the message across. So, Im excited and keen on learning a whole lot on this subject. So join me as we go further.

Learning how to use an SLR camera. (Canon EOS 350D) 😉

Im liking it already.
